TVAS FAQS

Getting Started

I’m new to voiceover. Where do I start?

We recommend starting at the BEGINNING! Most new students take our Intro to VO Workshop first (a 2-hour introductory workshop), followed by our 4-Week Beginner Course; we think these are the perfect place to start.

You can check our schedule and attend a live Intro to VO workshop, you can purchase it to watch on-demand from our TVAS Shop, located in our TVAS Voicer Portal. Simply become a free member to gain access to the Voicer Portal.

Do I need experience to start voice acting?

No experience is required. While some students do come in with some voice acting or related experience, many students come in completely brand new. All experience levels are welcome!

How do I know if voice acting is right for me?

Our Voice Over Skill Assessment session or Intro to Voice Over Workshop is the perfect first step. You’ll read scripts, get feedback, and learn what the industry really looks like today.

I’ve been told I “have a great voice.” Does that mean I’ll be good at VO?

A great voice is helpful, but more importantly, voice over is about acting, storytelling, mic technique, and consistency. We help you build the skills that actually book work.

What if I'm shy or nervous?

Welcome home. We specialize in safe, supportive training spaces. You’re not alone, and you’ll never be forced to read before you’re ready.

Training & Classes

Are your classes online?

Yes! TVAS is now fully virtual. All workshops, coaching, and events are held online via Zoom so you can join from anywhere.

What class should I take first?

Most students start with:

If you’re unsure, book a Guidance Counseling session, and we’ll map out your path.

How long does it take to become a working voice actor?

It varies widely. For most people, it’s more like months to a year or more, not weeks. We’ll help you build a realistic plan and pace.

How often should I be training?

Think of VO like the gym. Consistency matters. Many students attend:

What is the difference between Mic Drop-In workshops and Specialty workshops?

Our Mic Drop-In (formerly Ongoing) workshops are your “Weekly Mic Work!” The best way to develop your voice over chops is by doing it frequently and consistently! Think of Mic Drop-Ins as your continued general education – they meet weekly, with performance as the primary focus. To master any craft, ongoing training and professional feedback is crucial. “Repetitio Est Mater Studiorum” (Repetition is the Mother of Learning). Please note that we also sell our Mic Drop-In workshops in packages of 4 or 8.
– The Mic Drop-In 4-Pack expires 30 days after purchase.
– The Mic Drop-In 8-Pack expires 60 days after purchase.
*All sales final.

Specialty workshops, or “focused learning,” are booked as individual workshops that focus on specific areas of your voice over journey, whether it’s performance, tech, or business. Choose workshops that align with your interests and goals!

Equipment & Home Studio

What equipment do I need for a Virtual workshop?

You don’t need any special recording equipment to attend! Make sure you have the latest free version of Zoom downloaded to your computer, tablet, or smart phone and that your device is charged. If you don’t have an external mic you want to use, the built-in camera and mic on your device are perfectly fine.

*Please note that some workshops do require a mic and camera.

Do I need my own recording studio before I start?

No, you just need just a smartphone, tablet, or computer, and an internet connection! For auditioning and booking work, you’ll eventually need a basic home recording setup at a minimum. We’ll help you build it the right way.

What microphone should I buy?

It depends on your space, voice, and budget. Book Home Studio Setup or Private Tech Coaching, and we’ll make specific recommendations before you spend money on a mic.

Can you help me set up my booth or closet studio?

Absolutely! We offer Virtual Studio Visits where we screen-share and walk you through setup, testing, and sound treatment.

Work, Career, & Income

Can I really make money in voice acting?

Yes – but it is a business, not a quick side hustle. Income varies widely and is built over time through training, marketing, and consistency.

Can I "fast-track" my voiceover career?

There are many things you can fast-track in life, but becoming a professional voice actor isn’t one of them. Skill development takes time and dedication. Becoming a fully-equipped voice actor requires many skill sets including: dynamic vocal performance, the ability to understand and apply direction, home studio gear & audio recording/tech knowledge and capabilities, as well as understanding and becoming proficient with the vast industry-wide business & marketing expectations/applications. Most serious talent preparing themselves to work professionally in this field train consistently with us for six to twelve months minimum.

Where does voice over work come from?

Voice over genres where work can be found include: commercials, eLearning, audiobooks, corporate narration, animation, video games, telephony/IVR, explainers, promo, live announce, in-show narration, and more. There are many ways to find this work, including: direct marketing, production company talent rosters, VO agents & managers, pay-to-play websites, online marketplaces, social media, and more.

Do I need to live in LA or New York to have a voice over career?

No. The industry is largely remote-friendly now. Most of our students work from home studios worldwide.

Demos & Marketing

Do you produce demos?

Yes. We offer custom demo production and demo freshening with original copy, direction, and professional post-production.

How do I know when I’m ready to record a demo?

Your demo is your #1 marketing tool and an important investment in your career, so take your time finding your voice and refining your skills and range. You never want to rush recording your voiceover demo; we highly recommend taking your time and doing it right. Having your demo produced is a big deal, so professional training and guidance is strongly encouraged; our experienced team of coaches can help you determine when you’re truly ready

Once you can confidently and consistently self-direct and craft bookable performances on your own, we recommend booking a one-on-one Demo Ready Review with Melissa Moats (found under TVAS Exclusive Events) to be sure that you’re ready. Melissa will not only assess your performances, she’ll help you decide which demo type(s) makes the most sense for you and will create a custom action plan for the next steps in your career.

Will TVAS get me an agent?

We don’t place talent, but we absolutely:

  • Prepare you for submissions
  • Help you research production companies and agencies
  • Coach you through marketing, outreach, and branding

All Things TVAS & Miscellaneous

Do you offer any discounts?

Yes! We highly recommend subscribing to our mailing list because we offer special deals, discounts, and promos quite often!

Do you offer workshops for kids? What are the age requirements for your workshops?

While we adore kids and how wildly creative they are, to attend workshops or study privately at our studio, the minimum age requirement is 16 years of age.

What does a TVAS Membership get me?

We offer a few different membership options; you can read about what each of them offers on our website under Services > Memberships.

Please note that our paid Pro Membership and Pro Plus Membership do require a 12-month commitment. We do not offer refunds, credits, or exchanges.
