Hello fellow voicers! I had so much fun chatting with Tim Callaway about his voice over adventure. Tim has a background of 6 years being a DJ. He found that being a DJ did not pay enough money so he started pursuing podcasting. Tim’s podcasts were about the “happiest place in the world”; Disneyland and everything and anything Disney. During this time Tim was living near our original TVAS studio and often noticed the studio sign out front. In May 2016 he stopped in and thus began his VO career. One of the classes he enjoyed the most was Dave Fennoy’s character workshop. [Read more…] about Joy’s Talent Spotlight: Timothy Callaway
The holiday rush of last-minute radio and TV spots have subsided. As someone still relatively new to the industry, a thought crossed my mind: Is there ever a slow time for getting voice over work? My answer is no, for one simple reason. I have the ability to pick up the phone. Most days, it’s easy to do, but some days, it weighs over 50 pounds. Although every day is a fresh start, and a chance to set course in any direction, I really love the beginning of a new year. It’s a great time for reflection and a time to ponder all of the countless possibilities ahead. As 2018 kicks off I’d like to share some inspiring words passed along to me from someone very special in my life. These words resonate so deeply. [Read more…] about New Year Blog Love from Mama VO
I think I’ve figured out the best way to book gigs: go on vacation. It never fails. I’m packing, shutting off the water, herding the cats into their carrying cases, and boom! My email sings out with a “Hey, could you do this rush job today?” thing.
Now, were I to NOT be going anywhere, you know, just sit around—it would ZIP, ZERO, just CRICKETS!

Over the years, there have been two camps that become more vocal this time of year: Those who make New Year’s Resolutions, and those who don’t. Even way back in ancient Rome, where at the beginning of each year, the Romans made promises to the god Janus, for whom the month of January is named. [Read more…] about To Resolve or Not to Resolve?
Some people thrive on routines. Some enjoy complete chaos. To some, watching the morning TV show, eating the tried and true cereal, and getting out the door at 8:07 is the thing to do.
How about you? How will you manage your freelance VO day? Is there a time for and value in social media? Is there a best time to record? When will you edit your stuff? When will you market? When will you practice and keep up with learning the craft, adapting to the fast changing VO world? [Read more…] about What do I do with my VO day?
Hello fellow voicers! It is my pleasure to feature Samantha Moore in this segment of Joy’s Talent Spotlight. Samantha, or “Sammi” as we adoringly call her, was one of the first students and technicians I met at TVAS. She was so very kind and instantly made me feel welcome. Sammi began imitating commercials and making up her very own when she was just six or seven years old. [Read more…] about Joy’s Talent Spotlight: Samantha Moore
Open Season for eating. A new cookie recipe, you say? New meat dish? I don’t discriminate. If I haven’t tried it, no worries, I have until December 31st (stay tuned for the Resolutions issue). Found out the hard way that I don’t need a degree in nutrition to realize that a combination of Cheetos (one of the 4 basic food groups) and 4 oatmeal chocolate chip cookies for dinner + an early live session = trouble for my brain waves.
