Joy’s Talent Spotlight: John McClain

December 21, 2018 By Joy Kingston Leave a Comment

Hello to all my talented friends and lovers of TVAS! Today I want to write about a man we all know and respect as being an extremely knowledgeable recording engineer, sound designer and voice over actor, John McClain. Most of us have benefited from John’s vast experience through either taking one of his engineering courses, sitting in on his On-Going coaching sessions, his Home Studio Set Up class or just benefitting from his willingness to answer all our questions. Many of us have been lucky to have John live, in our home, helping set up our home studio. It’s not every day you can say you’ve had a Grammy award winning talent in your home. That’s right…. John won a Grammy in 2001 for his work with George Carlin. John is the owner of The Dog and Pony Show, an audio company here in Las Vegas. His company earned an Emmy in 2008 for a Comedy Central Short series along with many more awards and honors. How did all this talent begin? In the late 80’s, early 90’s John worked at a studio in Detroit starting as a “dub” guy which led to his first experience in the Voice Over world when he auditioned for a spot for Jeep. He, unbelievable as it is, did not get the job. But it piqued his interested is the business which led to John now doing spots in commercial and narration genres. In 2000 John moved to Las Vegas after Studio Center offered him an opportunity to transfer from Detroit. He furthered is voice over journey by taking classes with Alice Whitfield which led to his meeting Melissa Moats. John enjoys taking Brent Mukai’s Improv classes in addition to Jack De Golia’s Animation classes. He just recently had Melissa produce his brand-new demo. John has wonderful advice when choosing who to produce your demo…” Choose the person who knows you really, really well”! Which for him, me and so many others of us….it was Mama VO! In addition to John’s multi-faceted life, he loves all things nature: camping, surfing, skiing and hiking with his family. Here’s a fun fact about John; he was a member of a band, the Hoolapoppers, circa 1995. John, I had a great time chatting with you, thanks so very much.
